More December, 2014

Many thanks to all the wonderful 2014 donors who joined our community of BREAD readers:

Customers of Sandmeyer’s Bookstore in Chicago generously filled the holiday BREAD donation box with beautiful books. Sandmeyer’s and Magic Tree Books, Oak Park, IL, also continuously donated many boxes of advance reader copies. Kids love clutching the not-yet-in-stores titles, and freshest series books. Independent bookstores, and independent readers, are jewels indeed.

Individual donors at Abacus Solutions LLC in Marietta, GA donated 13 laptop computers to BREAD’s junior high readers in Harvey. Fluent reading depends on background knowledge. Yet such knowledge can be elusive, when kids lack daily newspapers, informed parents, school or local libraries. The digital divide poses a particularly insidious barrier, as print sources disappear in all communities. The donated laptops will bridge that divide for those of our junior high kids who currently possess no internet access.

A new individual donor paired a generous check with this terrific note: “I’ve been an avid reader from childhood on and grabbing a good book for an hour or an afternoon is still one of my favorite activities. I’m glad to see an organization dedicated to getting good books in children’s hands”.
